Mighty Writers’ mission is to teach Philadelphia students to think and write with clarity so they can achieve success at school, at work and in life.

Volunteers are integral to our success. More than 300 of the city’s best creative minds (writers, teachers, journalists, artists, etc.) teach and mentor some 2,000 kids at Mighty Writers annually. Everything we do at Mighty Writers is designed to combat Philadelphia’s literacy crisis. Some forty percent of our city’s students drop out of high school, and half of Philly’s working-age adults have basic literacy issues. These are the statistics we’re out to change.

Whether online or in-person, we take students through every genre of writing, always with the same goal: to inspire kids to think clearly and write with clarity.

Writing workshops typically run four sessions and are designed for various age groups. All of our writing programs are free.

Each year, Mighty Writers reaches 3,300 students through 5 core programs: Afterschool Academy; College and Career Prep; Evening and Weekend Workshops; One-On-One Mentorships; and Mighty Toddlers.

During COVID-19, we have also provided more than 25,000 families with lunches, groceries, diapers and books and offered extensive online workshops (23 workshops last spring reached 551 students and 37 workshops this summer reached 600 students).
